OBSIDIAN, NATURE’S GLASS

Obsidian is a naturally occurring glass that because of ts shine, color and strength stands out from common rocks and crystals in the mineral world.
Because of its chemical composition, it is sometimes referred to as a mineral, however, it is important to know that because of its structure it is not a mineral but a volcanic glass. The most common type of obsidian is black but it can be found in many different colors and variations. Some examples of different colors in obsidian are, silver sheen, gold sheen, mahogany, rainbow and the rare fire obsidian. Obsidian has been considered a valuable material for many centuries because of its sharpness and strength.

HOW IS OBSIDIAN SHAPED?

The first step in working with obsidian, is of course obtaining the individual stones. We collect all our obsidian from mines in and around Teotihuacan, Mexico. All this obsidian has been around for decades and it was a very valuable resource to our ancestors. Once the stones are collected, each individual artist can decide what he or she wants the stone to take the form of. Because each piece of art is made from a single piece of obsidian and made all by hand no two pieces will ever look exactly the same or be the same size. Using either a stone or a chisel the artist will start chipping the obsidian into the desired shape all the while smoothing out the edges with a buffer. After the piece is completed it is taken to the polishing area where it is buffed to a perfect mirror-like finish using special tools and obsidian powder.

Decorations

Our sculptures can be made either solely of obsidian or they can be inlaid and decorated with different types of semi-precious stones and shells of all types. We use only the highest quality material with stones and shells such as, abalone shell, quartz, amethyst, lapis lazuli, tiger’s eye, malachite, sodalite, opal and opalite, jade, amazonite, different types of jaspers and agates as well as mother of pearl, aventurine and goldstone. All these stones are cut and shaped individually before they are inlaid into the obsidian sculpture. After the stones are inlaid the entire sculpture is polished to give it a shiny and mirror like finish. Sculptures may be completed in as a little as 1 day up to several months depending on the complexity of the pieces. If the piece happens to chip, or crack the entire process has to be repeated.

OUR CREATIONS

A vast majority of our work is based and influenced by the Teotihuacan culture as well as other prominent Mesoamerican cultures such as Aztec or Mayan. You will find sculptures dedicated to different deities, animals and monuments representative to the region of Teotihuacan but because of the nature of the stone and the skills of each artist we can create just about anything out of obsidian. We can do custom work where we will work directly with you and your design to create a one-of a kind creation. If you can imagine it we can create it. We are also open to suggestions and take customers recommendations for our future work.
